Ok so there is a bit of an issue with this sub-topic, with some people complaining they don't want to hear all the depressing news that is posted up here. So I'd like to start a thread that shows when Good News comes along, just so we don't get too carried away with all the downer.
So to start:
500 new jobs created by Hewlett Packard in Leixlip, with 300 coming onstream immediately as Leixlip has been selected for their global services desk.

On what was a very successful day for the Irish team at the European Indoor Championships, the highlight was a bronze medal for Leevale's Derval O'Rourke.

Had a meeting with a client today, he informed us that we were charging him too little for the project works, and that as a year had passed since we started on site, he will now be paying us 15% more from now on, backdated to Jan 1st.
Gobsmacked...... most clients are trying to drive down prices at the moment

Ferrari Challenge Stradales are relative good value from a VRT perspective because the VRT Office works on original price x years depreciation so even though a CS is destined to be a future classic and has held its value during the recession and is more expensive than many 07 & 08 F430's in the UK the VRT is still less?? Does that qualify for this section? Have I got the hang of it?
It's car-related, & good news, so I'd consider it legit. EDIT: Toad has a point though, as there's a thread already for that sort of good news! :)
And they've arrested two lads up north for the shooting. As I considered the threads on these unfortunate deaths one of the most depressing ever on Octane, I consider this the best news. (Lets hope they're actually guilty of something).

Rugby yeah. 61 years later. It was amazing to think that this triumph took so long and was so knife edge at the end. A sort of lesson in life, if Jones hadn't missed, this would have been a mere footnote. We are all distinguished from being, or avoiding being, footnotes by a whim or a stroke of luck.
And I was at the boxing, Dunne rocks. I hope Cordoba is OK. He was stretchered off - boxing is a rough sport, Cordoba killed a guy in the ring. Notwithstanding this, it would be just awful if this second Irish triumph in one day was tarnished by a serious injury.
Who needs a recession anyway

Well it is good news depending on your personal hobbies and perspective :)
Ok last week Mrs Bunk & I were out in the Blachardstown Centre in Clery's, whereupon Mrs Bunk fell in love with a certain piece of furniture that was 20% off. I knew it was a bit pricy and if I went up North I could probably get it for another 20% off, but it was the perfect piece for where we wanted it and I was feeling a bit patriotic so went ahead with the purchase.
Anyway, came to delivery this week. Surprise surprise, I actually got a phonecall to ask me when suited me best (not the usual "er, are you Bunk, I'm standing outside your house and theres no answer" to which I normally have to reply, "yes theres no answer, because I actually have a ****ing job which I use for income to allow me to buy your horrendously overpriced furniture, did you ever think of calling beforehand?").
Next surprise, the lady on the phone was willing to try to work out an exact time (not the usual, "we can give you the morning or the afternoon", knowing full well that morning possibly means anywhere between 9 and 2.00, and afternoon means anywhere between 2 and 6).
Finally, to my astonishment, I asked if it could be really really early, so we didn't have to take any time off work for it. She said she would contact the delivery guy and get back to me.
I was shocked when she came back and said he could do between 7.00am and 7.30am!! Everyone in the office couldn't believe it and were taking wagers about whether or not he would actually show up and I think the money was on me getting in after 11 some time.
But against all odds, he rang me the night before just to make sure he had directions right, and showed up this morning at 7.15 am!!!
This to me was an example of exemplary customer service which was unheard of during the last 10 years.
Maybe its only what should be expected at all times, but its nice to see.
lenny_mc
14-05-2009, 03:54 PM
just on customer service, i tried to buy several things locally, but the complete lack of customer service in the shops really put me off, so i went up north where the customer service was excellent. Bad customer service really puts me off spending my money in that shop.
Cafe Mao
€12.50 recession lunch special.
Satay/Soup + Main + Coffee.
Today I had the nasi goreng while Mrs Bunk had the chicken & lemongrass salad. Fupping gorgeous both of them and good value.
I think I might have mentioned this before somewhere, but a newspaper in Stockholm did a lunch survey a month or so ago. The cheapest lunch (meal, bread, salad, drink, coffee included) was €4, the most expensive €8, the average about €5.50. These are lunch specials so there are only 2-3 different choices, perhaps not unlike what a pub does in Ireland for about €15 for the same thing. It just makes you wonder what's going on in this country as Stockholm is not a cheap place.
Yeah look we still have a ways to go but its getting there.

My good news this week:
the stig is reaching equilibrium! To me this means that I have no savings, therefore i cannot afford to purchase anything that may distract me from my personal goals in the near future and anything i do acquire, will be solely because of my own success.
The other side of equilibrium is of course, having no debt! Which makes me wealthier than the vast majority of people in any given room or on any given street. The good news is not being wealthier than most but the freedom that is as intoxicating as it is enlightening.

3 family members without jobs, 2 sisters and a bro in law. All in the same house with no wages coming! Well the bro in law got 8 hours last week in a shop.
Last month sister 1 got a good paying job in a bakery, yesterday sister 2 got a good paying job with the council and on the same day bro in law got a decent job working 45 hours a week instead of 8.
Really happy for them, time to pay off their massive debts trying to survive and not worry about the bailiffs’ anymore.
Actually things have picked up for me too but that's all I'm saying :hat:. There's a bit more of a 'buzz' around the place of late, seems to be a lot more jobs advertised and a bit of an uptick in business/spending. People seem to have realised that the world hasn't actually ended.
Congrats to everyone who gets/keeps their job, to anyone who doesn't have one, and wants one, chin up, you'll get there in the end. Honest.

€800m Ballymun regeneration gets go-ahead
watch listen Monday, 21 September 2009 15:38
Treasury Holdings has secured full planning permission for the €800m regeneration of Ballymun Town Centre in north Dublin.
The new Spring Cross development represents the largest mixed-use town centre permission that has ever been granted in Ireland.
The company is promising 2,000 construction jobs in a scheme that will take three years to complete.
The scheme includes 360 apartments, 60,000sq metres of retail space, 35,000sq metres of offices and 11,000sq metres of other uses including a leisure and civic building with cinemas, bowling alleys, a public library and restaurants.
Work on the project will begin next year.

Do you think pumping money into it will make it a better place to live? It's just mean there'll be some new stuff for the scumbags to break!
I know they're not all scumbags but the place has a name for a reason and if you don't remove the bad apples, it will always be the same.

Couldn't agree more, its only when people have a purpose in life, e.g a job to get up for in the morning and there is a functional community to live in, that we will see an end to the mess that is Ballymun. Not feckin bowling alleys and more retail space, will we ever learn!

Do you think pumping money into it will make it a better place to live?
Yes, of course it will. It will not solve the social problems of the area overnight, but there is no doubting that it will make peoples lives better, even if only marginally initially. Nobody likes to live in drab surroundings. It will bring an increase in local employment, not just from the construction, but hopefully from the retail and office units. Local people would also benefit from increased facilities. Just because there are scumbags in an area doesn't lessen the needs of everyone else.
On the other hand, if you adopt the attitude, that sure it's just full of scumbags and not worth bothering trying do anything about, then do you wonder why large numbers of kids grow up disenfranchised and disillusioned? If your neighborhood reflects the fact that society thinks you are not worth a damn, what do you think that does to someone?
This is a good thing, trust me. As someone who has to work in the nearby Finglas/Charlestown area every day, this whole area of Dublin needs any sort of boost it can get.

The "regeneration" is going very well for us down limerick way - moving problem people into new neighbourhoods has really made crime and antisocial behaviour more evenly dispersed throughout the city and made everyones life miserable.
Then we'll give them shiny free new houses to move back into, while most homeowners are left to pick up the pieces.

Tis working well alright, instead of drug dealers, burnt out cars, beatings, bonfires, intimidation, joyriding etc etc etc in a few select parts of the city, its now citywide and includes formerly quiet surrounding villages too.
Three cheers for the do gooders.
D2 in Harcourt Street has reduced the price of all carvery lunches to €6.95, from previous prices of €9.95 and €10.50. Thats a whopping 30% or thereabouts. If I got my dinner there every day (which I don't) that would be a whopping €15pw, €60pm, €780 pa saving. Or to really make it sound better, €1,625 pre tax.
Now its fairly standard carvery, but they do some decent items and quantity is never a problem. Yesterday I had some really nice stout and leek sausages and they were excellent. Theres normally a joint or two (beef/lamb or turkey), a fish course, a curry or ghoulash or bolognese or something, and a veggie option.
I think €6.95 is pretty hard to beat, and in "old money" pretty much back where carvery lunches were 8 years ago.
Deflation is in.
I was in a coffee shop in London, yesterday. a sandwich, two bottles of mineral water and a coffee, for £5.75. Reasonably good value, I thought, and a hell of a lot less than one would have to pay in most outlets in Ireland.
(On the other hand, a 15 minute, each way, train ride on the Heathrow Express, cost £32, return, while a three stop, 10 minute, Underground trip, cost £4.)

OK so 422k people unemployed is nothing to shout about, and the press are speculating that emigration is behind the 3k decrease this month, but a decrease in unemployemnt is good news whatever way you look at it, even if only due to the government having to spend less on SW. Lets hope this trend continues for the foreseeable.
BBC NEWS
Sharp increase in new car sales
New car sales recorded a sharp increase in October, helped by the government's scrappage scheme.
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) says 168,942 new cars were registered last month, an increase of 31.6% compared with October 2008.
The SMMT said the "cash for bangers" incentive scheme accounted for more than 20% of the new car sales.
Demand was also helped by customers wanting to avoid the VAT increase due in January.
''Encouragingly, there has also been an increase in demand in the fleet and business sectors, which will be critical in sustaining recovery next year,'' said SMMT chief executive Paul Everett.
Story from BBC NEWS:
Some good news down the line, there will be a supply of '09 cars we can import , should we have any money left in our pockets.

Was speaking to a landscape gardener recently.
Made redundant.
His response - I contrive to meet people everywhere and bring the conversation around to gardening. I get jobs every day, I'm busy and making a living.
This is the attitude that will save the whole country. Don't sit on your Swiss moaning, get off it and find and make the opportunities.

A chink of light....
I work closely with another chap, we have a pivotal roll between teh project teams and operations teams. We do the same job, I'm here nearly 3 years, he' here a year longer than me, we are both contractors in here via different arms of the same massive faceless corporation - the one that makes brown sauce
Anyhoo, we were in a meeting today with our new operations manager and he's let us in that he has requested "conversions" for us into full time permanent staff as part of his re-org
It wont mean much money but it will mean something smelling like security and at least a chance to get back on a career ladder of sorts. It may mean my mrs can go part time next year when the kids are all in school/Montessori which would improve our lives financially and in terms of quality of life with the family, and it might mean I can do some sort of bloody training and career development.
got to sit tight for a few weeks though yet... please big beardy guy in the sky :-)
